The normal led display layout connection
In the normal led display layout connection, There are three main parts, the input source ( normally is the computer), sending box ( video processor), and the led display.
1: The input source connect with the sending box through HDMI/DVI/DP port, The DHMI/DVI/DP cable has a length limit of less than 30 meters.
2: The sending box connect with the led display through Ethernet cable, The Ethernet cable has a length limit of less than 100 meters.
As you can see the picture below:
Advantages and drawbacks of Optical fiber transmission in led display
Fiber optic transmission, simply put, is the transmission of data through a special medium called optical fiber. Optical fiber is to convert electrical signals into optical signals and use transparent glass fibers for transmission. The transparent glass fibers are made of pure quartz and can efficiently transmit optical signals. These optical signals carry the data we need.
In LED displays, optical fiber transmission acts like a highway, transmitting large amounts of data from the source to the display screen quickly and accurately at the speed of light.
Advantages:
- Fast speed with wide bandwidth: The transmission speed of optical fiber is very fast and can meet the transmission needs of large data volume and high real-time requirements.
- Long distance transmission: Fiber optic signals can travel long distances without significant attenuation. Normally the transmission distance can up to 10km
- Optical fiber transmission is free from electromagnetic interference so the signal quality is stable.
- It’s easier to organize the cable, normal Cat5 ethernet cable’s carry ability is 1G/s bandwidth, while optical fiber’s bandwidth is 10G/s. Hence the optical fiber theoretically can have 10 times the carry ability, But due to some redundant usage, normally 1 optical fiber can carry 8 ethernet cable’s carry ability in led display. This means less signal cable would be used
Drawbacks:
- Higher budget: it needs to add ethernet signal to the fiber signal converter, and a fiber signal to the ethernet signal converter. Plus the optical fiber cable also costs more than the ethernet cable
- Need professional technician to install the optical fiber and do the configuration
When do you need optical fiber in led display?
There are mainly two conditions that we need to use optical fiber in LED display
1: the sending box is more than 100 meters away from the LED display
For example, in many cases, all the control units including the LED display’s video processor would be placed in a control room. And the control room is far away from the led display. In a shopping mall project that we did, it has total 32 pcs led display, that all the led display’s video processor is place in a control room. The linear distance from the control room to the nearest led display is 60 meters. But as the placing of the cable needs to make a lot of turns, the actual distance from the led display to the video processor is 150 meters away.
2: High resolution LED display such as 4K, 8K or big resolution LED display
When the resolution becomes big, it would need more ethernet cable between the sending box and the led display. For example, for a pixel pitch 1.25mm, 8K led display, it total has 7680*4320 = 33,177,600 pixels. Totally has 16 columns * 16 rows of 480*270 cabinet. Video processor need to have at least 52pcs output port. Which means it need to has 52 pcs ethernet cable from the video processor to the led display. Even though the distance between the video processor is not 100 meters away from the led display. It is also not neat and easy to organize those cable. Hence for high resolution led display project, we would use the video processor with optical fiber port ( which one optical fiber port equate 8 pcs ethernet cable), and then we only need to organize 52/8= 7 pcs optical fiber cable.
How to use optical fiber in led display?
All the LED display’s receiving card is connected through an ethernet cable, hence optical fiber can not connect with the receiving card directly. We need to convert the optical fiber signal into a normal ethernet cable signal. So it has two conditions
1: Video processor does not have optical fiber output
When the video processor does not have optical fiber output port, we need to use two equipment. One is ethernet cable to optical fiber converter, the other is optical fiber to ethernet cable converter.
2:Video processors have optical fiber output
When the video processor have optical fiber output port, then we only need the “optical fiber to ethernet cable converter” , some video processor itself also has the optical fiber to ethernet cable converter function.
Video processor that has optical fiber within
Most LED display control system manufacturer has video processors built-in with optical fiber output, and below are some popular models
In Novastar : VX400, VX600, VX1000, Mctrl660 pro, H series,
In Colightlight: VX10, VX6, X20, Z6pro, Z8t, Z5/Z4 pro, X series
In Brompton: Tessera SX40
In Megapixel: Helios
What led display project would use optical fiber solution?
1: High resolution led display projects
2: Shopping mall that all the video processor would be placed in a control room
3: Music concert that all control unit is placed in one place
4: XR project
5: Virtual production projects that the video processor as optical fiber within
