Color Space Of The LED Display

Color space is not a common specs of the led display, but it is very important. Such as for TV studio project, it need the led display tio have 100% meet Rec.709, and for Vitural production led display project, it need to meet more than 95% Rec.2020. The wider the color space coverage, the more color the led display is able to present.

Color space of the led display

Color space also can be called color gamut. As the led display’s color is mixed by different portion of Red, Green and Blue light. In 1931 the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) published the CIE 1931 color spaces which define the relationship between the visible spectrum and the visual sensation of specific colors by human color vision.

We can put the led display’s red, green and blue light’s coordinates on the CIE 1931 Chromaticity Diagram, The areas that the red, green and blue coordinates enclose is the color that this led display is able to show, which is also the color space of the led display.

Popular color Gamut standard

Rec.709

Rec. 709, also known as Rec.709, BT.709, and ITU 709, is a standard developed by ITU-R for image encoding and signal characteristics of high-definition television. Rec.709 is a basic color space for TV studio led display application.

Rec.2020

ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020, more commonly known by the abbreviations Rec. 2020 or BT.2020, defines various aspects of ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) with standard dynamic range (SDR) and wide color gamut (WCG), including picture resolutions, frame rates with progressive scan, bit depths, color primaries, RGB and luma-chroma color representations, chroma subsamplings. Rec.2020 is often required in Vitural production led display

DCI-P3

DCI-P3 is a color space first defined in 2005 as part of the Digital Cinema Initiative, to be used for digital theatrical motion picture distribution. DCI-P3 color space is required for theater led display.

LED display color gamut coverage ratio

As different LED lamp’s red, green and blue lamp would have different wavelength light, hence the chromaticity coordinates would be different. In order to know the range of the color gamut of the led display. Normally we would use the color gamut of the led display to compare with the existing color gamut standard. With below formula:

Ratio = Areaintersection / AreaColor gamut standard

Areaintersection is the intersection area between the led display’s color spare and the stand color Gamut standard

AreaColor gamut standard is the area of the stand color Gamut

Such as, color gamut of red(0.620,0.3077), green(0.1557,0.7391), blue(0.1326,0.0589),  would be 99.82% of REC709, 86.79% of REC2020 and 93.94% of DCI-P3.

How to measure the color space of the led display

From above we know that the color space of the led display is just the chromaticity coordinates of the red, green and blue light. If you have a color meter , its software has the color gamut measurement software. And you can have the color space measured in few seconds. Or you can use a normal brightness meter, then you can measure the red, green and blue light’s brightness specs separately, as the brightnesss meter also have the chromaticity coordinates, then we can record the coordinates, and input it into the computer to do the calculation latter.
