Nowadays when it comes to display, HD, FHD, 2K, 4K, and even 8K often come up. But what is it? why does everybody talk about it, and does it an important factor in selecting display? To be short, HD/FHD/2k/4k/8k represent the resolution of the display. As we known that the screen is made up by pixels, and given a specific screen size, the more pixels the screen has, more details the screen is able to show. In the old days, You may also heard about 540P, 720P, and 1080P. “P” is standard for progressive scanning which is a different than Interlace scanning. You can see the difference resolution chart below.
540P represent the resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, which means that this screen has 960 columns of pixels arrays, and 540 rows of pixels arrays. It is also be called Quarter High Definition (qHD) as it is fourth of 1080P’s(full HD) resolution
720P represent the resolution of 1280×720 pixels, which means that this screen has 1280 columns of pixels arrays, and 720 rows of pixels arrays. And this resolution also be called as HD. Hence an HD display means that this screen has a resolution of 1280*720.
How many cabinets to make a HD screen?
As we known from above that HD, 2k, 4k, or 8K only represent the resolution of the screen. But there also have another important factors when concerning the led screen. As the pixels of the led screen are made of led lamp, and the pixel pitch can be vary from 0.9mm – 2.5mm.
Now the most cabinet size is 600*337.5mm, For example, if you want a HD screen, if you using 0.9mm pixel pitch, this screen would be only 1.8m W x 1.012m H using 3×3 cabinet. while if you using pixel pitch 1.25mm, the screen size would be 2.4m W x 1.35m using 4 x 4 cabinet.
Then we would know with a smaller pixel pitch, we can make the same resolution screen with smaller size. As you see the image below.
What is HD led video wall/2k led video wall/4K video wall/4K led screen
As known from above, HD means resolution 1920*1080, hence the screen with resolution of 1920*1080 we call it HD led display. While for 2K led display, normally when the horizontal resolution has exceed 2000 pixels, we then call it a 2K led display. If it is over 4000pixels, then we call it 4K led display.
The bigger the resolution, the more details the led display can give. But for many cases, you do not need that high resolution. As our eyes distiguish ability would decrease when the viewing distance increase. Hence when you decide to buy a HD or 2k led screen, first thing you need to do is to know about your viewing distance, and then you can decide the pixel pitch.
Hence even if the screen is 2K, at certain viewing distance, it do not mean it would have a good viewing experience.
Difficults in making HD/2k/4k/8k led display
When the resolution of the led display becomes bigger, we need to consider if our computer’s display card can carry so many pixels. For example, nowadays most computers can carry HD and 2K resolutions. Some computer can carry 4K resolution, but only few can carry 8K resolution. Hence when your led display has reached over 4K resolution, we need to consider to use a special media server( a special computer that can carry high resolutions).
For example, for 8K resolution led display, currently it also does not have an applicable data transfer cable to hold 8K data. Hence for 8K resolution, normally would need 4 pcs 4k port such as HDMI2.0, or DP1.3 to splice together. Then in the software part, we splicing those windows to make a bigger screen. It also would need a special software to display the display content. And it also need a special computer to play the 8K resolution video. normally we call it media server. such as Novastar ET2000
